The pilgrims from various countries are walking toward the city to commemorate Arabaeen which marks 40 days after the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (PBUH), the grandson of the holy prophet of Islam.
Muslim pilgrims from regional countries descend on the holy city of Karbala for the culmination of a 40-day mourning period for the infallible Shia imam.
The number of pilgrims participating in this year’s mourning ceremony is expected to exceed 20 million. The faithful pilgrims have gathered in a show of unity ahead of the Day of Arba’een ceremonies which will climax on Monday.
Thousands of security forces have been deployed on the routes leading to Karbala.
It is worthy to mention that Imam Khomeini, the late founder of the Islamic Republic said it is the months of Muharram and Safar which have kept Islam alive.
Imam Khomeini also said that the Islamic Revolution under his wise leadership was inspired by message of Ashura.
Islamic revolution revived genuine Islamic teachings and promoted the universal message of Ashura.
